Do We Even Want This ???

Today is the day. It is the day we commemorate the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001 (I prefer to call it a commemoration, rather than an "anniversary" - - anniversaries are things we celebrate, and this is most certainly NOT one of those things).

John McCain and Barack Obama agreed long ago to, essentially, suspend campaigning on this day. They are set to make a joint appearance at "Ground Zero" in New York. The rough-and-tumble of campaigning will presumably resume AFTER today - - that is to say, tommorrow.

And I wonder - - do we the people want this day set aside for a "kinder, gentler" approach with the presidential candidates? This commemorative day should remind all of us that we have enemies, and that we remain incredibly vulnerable to further attack, and that we have remained - - THANK GOD - - free from further attack for seven years. And those realities should inform the ways in which we view the presidential candidates.

And those realities should stir tension in the hearts and minds of all Americans. It's not the stuff of "kinder, gentler" campaigns. In this election cycle there are radically different views about America, its place in the world, and its moral authority, that are in play. There is, no doubt, a "great debate" happenning in our midst.

Let the battle rage on..............

"Does Patriotism Matter Anymore?" Part 563.......

Now comes the news that thousands of American flags were tossed in a trash dumpster, after a Barack Hussein Obama campaign rally.

A sad state of affairs, and yet another reason to question "who is this guy, and what is he really about?"

Denver Post writer David Harsanyi questions just what it is, exactly, that the Obama gang was supposed to do with "thousands of left over handflags." That's probably what Obama's campaign team wondered, as well.

And that's why we should all question the son of a former bureaucrat in the communist government of Kenya.

My family heritage has been, for several generations, distinctly American. As such, I was taught to respect the United States flag. Big flag, little flag, cloth flag, paper flag, expensive flag, cheap flag, whatever. You don't let it touch the ground. You don't let it get dirty. When you store a flag, it should first be properly folded. You show it RESPECT at all times.

You show it respect, not because it has a utilitarian value, like leftover cups and napkins. You show it respect because of what it is - - the American Flag.

And now we have Obama and company wondering what to do with leftover flags, and, apparently deciding there is no useful purpose for them, dumping them in the trash.

Perhaps they could have been donated to a veteran's cemetery (there are plenty of military installations near Denver)???

And this exotic, multicultural man-on-a-mission wants to command our military...........

Maybe Obama Needs A "Change?"

Last night, after John McCain's big speech at the Republican National Convention, I was in a convention media room doing some television interviews for KGMB-TV 9 in Honolulu.

After Reporter Ramsay Wharton finished interviewing me, I happened to walk past a FOX Newschannel media booth. The discussion happening on the set at FOX at that moment was about whether or not Barack Obama will need to "drop" Joe Biden from his ticket, simply because, in the face of the Republican V.P. nominee Sarah Palin, Joe Biden might be ineffectual.

In one sense, this discussion seemed silly to me. Obama cannot, with credibility, "drop" the man he picked to be his running mate three weeks ago, nor will he. However, the very fact that this discussion was taking place demonstrates how dramatically Governor Palin's presence in this race has changed it all - - literally, "everything" about this year's White House race.

I'm in flight today - - more when I return home...

Is It Ever Okay For A Guy To Hit A Girl???

The reaction to Governor Sarah Palin's speech last night at the Republican National Convention has been amusing, to say the least. An editorial in today's New York Post newspaper says it best, in my view.

A friend of mine, who is a talk show host, and a WOMAN, said it best to me, when I took her call on my Blackberry while shuffling out of the Excel Energy Arena last night. "Austin," she said with a verbal smirk. "Barack Obama is now the boy on the playground who just got his butt kicked by a girl, but it would be 'totally uncool' for him to hit her back."

I think there's some merit to that analysis. How does Obama, or Biden, jab at Governor Palin, without appearing like they're sexist pigs? They'll find a way, but, indeed, this IS Obama's worst nightmare.

My concern now is that Sarah will, in the end, upstage Senator McCain. The stage is being completely re-set for his acceptance speech tonite, and I'm told he'll appear in a "townhall" type of setting, a format in which he does extremely well....

The Trashing Of The Would-Be V.P. .....

Sure, it’s John McCain’s convention. But don’t bother reminding the attendees.

Here at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, the name that is all the “buzz” this week is “Sarah Barracuda.” And, somehow, I think this is precisely how Mr. McCain intended things to be.

Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska, McCain’s Vice Presidential running mate, has electrified this entire convention. While McCain’s support among the conservative base of the Republican Party has often rested on a “at least he’s not Obama” foundation, now, suddenly, conservatives believe that one of their own is on the ticket. Her selection by McCain was announced one week ago, and even before this convention began, an influx of over eleven million dollars in McCain-Palin campaign donations had been received, with even more donations coming in this week.

Why all the excitement over Palin? Well, at the Democratic Convention, we did just narrowly miss the first-ever nomination of a woman for the presidency. As expected, Palin’s presence on the Republican ticket no doubt offers some solace to those who were eager to see a woman elected President, and at least offers the hope that we could possibly elect the first female Vice President this year.

But Palin is a symbol of something that is quite common in America, yet is rarely acknowledged or understood in Washington, nor among the intelligentsia of American political punditry. Governor Palin represents the reality that today, a woman in America can break the “glass ceiling” and be in-charge, while still enjoying the otherwise “traditional” and “antiquated” things of life, like male-female relations, marriage, and motherhood.

Governor Palin symbolizes the reality that a woman can unapologetically be a responsible business owner, and a compassionate community activist, without succumbing to the extremism of the Marxist-styled, re-distributionist, big-government economics of Hillary Clinton. She also demonstrates that a woman can be truly feminine, while enjoying the wilds of the outdoors. She is the “soccer mom” (or, in her case, the “hockey mom”) who is not easily swayed by political ads and feel-good campaigns, but rather, is resolute in her political views and values.

In short, Governor Palin demonstrates that, today, a woman in America can be all that she is meant to be, and all that she wants to be, without being a political or social “liberal.” She has achieved the expressed goals of “feminism” - - independence, stature, equality - - without, apparently, hating men, and swearing-off parenthood.

Oh, and she has accomplished this without clinging to the coattails of her more famous husband (yes, that is an intended reference to former First Lady Clinton), or any other man.

Oh, and another thing. Palin has accomplished all this, while also defying the stereotype of the “frumpy,” religiously conservative, right-winger mom who gives no care or concern to her physical appearance. Palin is articulate, well-poised - - and “hot,” in a modest sort of way. She has the “look” that easily fits-in on the cover of a glamour magazine, yet she is an anathema to the worldview represented by such publications.

This fact is resonating with women and men alike. My own wife mentioned to me last weekend how “gorgeous” Governor Palin is, long before I dared to hint at the subject. And convention goers here in St. Paul this week are unashamed to acknowledge that their V.P. candidate is beautiful.

The total package that is “Sarah Barracuda” is, apparently, very threatening to the political and cultural left. Hence the ridicule of her over a teenage daughter that turns-up pregnant, and a sister that is apparently going through a nasty divorce and child custody battle. But the more Palin takes a beating in the press, the more the faithful love her - - here at McCain’s convention.

A "Return to Normalcy" At The Convention???

Hurricane Gustav is simmering-down, and turning out to NOT be as much of a threat as was anticipated.

Wednesday and Thursday should be more "conventional" days at the Republican National Convention....yet it is still unknown if McCain will show for his big, inauguration acceptance speech, on Thursday.

Governor Palin's selection as McCain's VP running mate has done nothing short of turning this election upsidedown. Donations to the McCain campaign have topped $10 million since Palin's selection last Friday.

More to follow soon.
